Day 1/7 (2018 Summer Biketrip)

Intro: In the summer of 2018 (where scandinavia had 3 months of amazing hot & sunny weather) I rode my ebike 400 km in Denmark, Norway and Sweden in a total of 7 days. It was my very first bike trip and I learned a lot about this kind of adventure – I’ll never forget it!

Monday 16th of July 2018 (1/7)

I started my trip at 07.30 AM from Frederikshavn and started to ride to Hirtshals, to grab my ferry to Norway. I quickly realized that my bike was too heavy, and way too heavy on the top. Couldn’t change my setup now – I was going on an adventure baby! But I had to ride with very little electric assistance for most of the first stint. Else my battery wouldn’t last long enough. The weight of my bike and gear made me use more battery than I had hoped for.

After approximately 55 km I reached the harbour in Hirtshals. I was in good time – I waited way over on hour if I remember right. I was actually able to charge my battery back up to 100% while waiting for the ferry to come – I had not used that much battery because of using very little electric assistance. The ferry took a little over 3 hours.

Once I arrived at 16.30 I went back in the saddle and started to ride North-East to the town of Horton. That stint was 54 km. Close to Horton I took a small break to hydrate a bit. My small backpack has a 2 liter water-bladder in it. I flattened out the solar panels while I got some water.

Once I arrived to Horton, I waited some time for the small ferry that was going to sail me east across the Oslo Fjord to the town of Moss. It turned out this ferry was actually free to cyclists – Very cool! The ferry ride was about half an hour. On the boat I started to feel the punishment of riding all day without sun protection cream. I literally didn’t have room for it. on my bike – That was a terrible decision and I’ll never make that mistake again!

I Arrived in Moss at 21.00 in the evening, and now I had 35 km left. It was very tough to travel these last 35 km. I was very tired and sun burned – it had been a long, first day – I had biked more than 100 km today. Multiple times I was looking for a place to set up camp… I wanted to quit. But still… I was getting closer and closer to the spot I had chosen on Google Maps back home. I really wanted to make it all the way to Vikene / Hankø in one day.

…and I actually did! At 23.30 I finally arrived in TOTAL darkness to the forrest that I’ve never been in before but had chosen back home on my computer, because it’s close to a island I know very well from my younger days.

I was all out of energy. I managed very slowly in about an hour to set up my tent etc. I fell asleep very fast after I got into my tent!
